An Apology to Dr. Martin Luther King / Celebrating Black History Months

http://humantrafficking.change.org/blog/view/an_open_letter_of_apology_to_dr_martin_luther_king_jr

Dear Dr. King,

Every year on this day we celebrate your birthday. But we also manage to celebrate ourselves in a way. We take a few moments to pat ourselves on the backs and smile at the progress we’ve made so far. We publish heartfelt quotes from school children about how they strive to model their young lives on your short but powerful one. And we tell ourselves that while we have a long journey ahead, the worst is behind us. Well, Dr. King, I’d like to give you something a little different than the warm fuzzies this year for your birthday. I’d like to give you an apology.

Martin Luther King, Nonviolence and Veganism

Monday January 18, 2010
Martin Luther King, Jr.

As Martin Luther King, Jr. spread his message of justice and nonviolence, his family took that message to the next logical step and applied it to animals. MLK’s son, Dexter Scott King, became vegan after being introduced to vegetarianism by comedian and PETA supporter Dick Gregory.

Dexter told Vegetarian Times in 1995, “Veganism has given me a higher level of awareness and spirituality, primary because the energy associated with eating has shifted to other areas.” Dexter said that his family, at first, wasn’t sure what to think of his new diet. But his mother, Corretta Scott King, later became vegan as well.

About the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, Corretta writes:

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught us through his example — the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service that so radiantly defined Dr. King’s character and empowered his leadership. On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit

The China study: the most comprehensive study of nutrition ever conducted and the startling implications for diet, weight loss and long-term health

$8 new, $6 used from 54 sellers

By T. Colin Campbell – BenBella Books (2006) – Paperback – 417 pages – ISBN 1932100660

Referred to as the “Grand Prix of epidemiology” by The New York Times, this study examines more than 350 variables of health and nutrition with surveys from 6,500 adults in more than 2,500 counties across China and Taiwan, and conclusively demonstrates the link between nutrition and heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. While revealing that proper nutrition can have a dramatic effect on reducing and reversing these ailments as well as curbing obesity, this text calls into question the practices of many of the current dietary programs, such as the Atkins diet, that are widely popular in the West. The politics of nutrition and the impact of special interest groups in the creation and dissemination of public information are also discussed. « lessmore »
